Christmas Eve Quiet time learnings

Posted in Learnings on December 24, 2010 by mikekeaton

I thought to do something different today…to share my handwritten journal entry as I wrote it this morning in my journal…enjoy:

Christmas Eve!!  I’ve enjoyed my time off this week.  very refreshing not having to speak last Sunday, going to 12 Stone with my family and just being with them this week!

I’ve been able to finish a book this week that I have been working on, “Unstoppable Force” – by Erwin McManus.  it was a good read and I got several nuggets from it.  I’ve started another book by a business author, “what got you here wont get you there”, which is about behavioral leadership.  I really enjoy the relaxed schedule that allows me to absorb some “condensed” reading this time of year.  if I’ve counted right, I’ve read 16 books this year , pretty good, but well short of my goal of 24, but that’s ok, I guess!  My reading list this year has been quite different – more based on what I’m going through vs. a balanced reading plan.  I trust in God’s providence in all that and in a few days I have a new set of months to get back on my reading plan!

The one book that means the most to me, I have read faithfully this year – the Bible!! I love the Bible!! I’m on track to read it through, but I probably wont accomplish that until January.  i have my own reading plan, b/c I cannot follow a calendar grid – it drives me crazy, by my plan is systematic none the less!!

Right now I am absorbing Job.  Today I could so resonate with him so much.  He was complaining and told his friends to leave him alone and let him complain.  He said his bitter heart had to complain b/c his life had gone from bad to worse and God wasn’t even letting him catch his breath!  This so sounds like me sometimes.  the only difference is I  don’t have boils from head to toe.  Usually, I am just frustrated about car repairs or money problems, which are so minuscule when i think about the situation Job was in: his wife was not encouraging him just belittling him, his kids were dead, he found himself in the poor house, and physically difficult to even look at with maggots crawling on his “pussing” boils.  He had reason to “dislike his life” s he put it, but me, ha!, what’s a little inconvenience or struggle compared to that?!

the NT tells me to grumble and complain about nothing, b/c I am supposed to stand out from the culture around me (Phil. 2:14-15).  I dont have any of the problems Job had so I have little to complain about in fact, my suffering, when compared to his, doesn’t even qualify as suffering!

My decision and application from this is to try and go through this day – Christmas Eve – w/o complaining!!  God has given me a fresh set of mercies today (I think it will take all of them to make it w/o complaining 🙂 but that’s ok, the Lord has told me to focus on today b/c tomorrow has enough of its own concerns!  I have grace sufficient for today!

Thank you Jesus for your love, grace, and mercy.  w/o you I can do nothing, but with you all things are possible…even not complaining, bless me as I seek to bless you this day!!  Love you Lord!!

Is your faith a noun or a verb?

Posted in Learnings on December 17, 2010 by mikekeaton

“Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but the Lord tests the heart” – Proverbs 17:3

I read this verse in my “Proverb for the day” reading (which is reading the chapter in Proverbs that is the same as the calendar date).  I have been doing this for years and always see new things.  Well, God spoke to me this morning as I read that verse, it was underlined in my Bible, so I stopped and meditated on it a bit then continued on in my reading of the rest of the chapter.  Then I read verse 19…

“anyone who loves to quarrel loves sin, anyone who trusts in high walls invites disaster”

It was the latter part of verse 19 that resonated in my heart and soul with verse 3…”anyone who trusts in high walls invites disaster”.  In Biblical times the cities were fortified with “high walls” and thereby safe from invasion from enemies, animals and other catastrophes.  So, with high walls any citizen would feel safe and secure, live in confidence and assurance that they could go about their lives with relative ease and comfort.

Another verse of Scripture found throughout the Bible is “the ones who are made right walk by faith, not by sight”.   I heard someone say once that “most Christians think of faith as a noun not a verb”.   Insert that idea in the verse and it would sound like this, “the ones who are made right walk by “the faith”, not by sight.    For many  of us, myself included, “the” faith is more often our system of belief, our creeds and doctrines, the things we know instead of a living, dynamic, dependent, fluid relationship with the God of our belief, creed, doctrine or knowledge.

Sometimes I trust in “high walls” to protect me, like my bank account, or my wife’s love for me, or my family or our church, or my children being obedient rather than trusting in my Lord and Savior to protect me and take care of me, and those things.  Why do I or does anyone for that matter, trust in our faith (noun) to keep me safe from suffering, harm, sickness, difficulty, hardship, etc, etc, instead of living by faith (verb)?

So, back to the beginning…“the Lord tests the heart”, and “anyone who trusts in “high walls” invites disaster”.  Possibly, the disaster we are experiencing right now, is because of our misplaced faith and so the Lord, because of His great love for us, tests us to let us see whether our faith is a noun or a verb.  I know this is true for me and God has spoken to me clearly about this today…

We would do well to heed the writer of Hebrews’ advice…”let us hold firmly to what we believe…our High Priest [Jesus], faced ‘testings’ like ours, yet w/o sin, so let us come boldly before the throne of grace to find help when we need it most”!!

ya’ll have a blessed day!

Happy Thanksgiving !!

Posted in Holidays on November 25, 2010 by mikekeaton

Not just on this day, but always remember…

“in everything GIVE THANKS for this is the will of God in Christ concerning you” – 1 Thess. 5:18

Also remember…

Giving Thanks is an evidence of Holy Spirit filling

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.  Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord,  always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Eph 5:18-20 -NIV

Not giving thanks can be hazadarous to your life

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Rom 1:21 – NIV

Giving thanks breeds generosity and that generosity more thanksgiving

You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.  This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.-2 Cor 9:11-12-NIV

Giving Thanks is God’s will for our lives

in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus“. -1 Thess 5:18-NASB

Giving Thanks ‘publicly’ glorifies the Lord

Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. 1 Chron 16:-NIV

Giving thanks is always connected to worship, giving, singing, praising, and joyful celebration

A Thanksgiving Psalm

1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. 2 Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. Ps 100-NIV

Enjoy the blessings of the day and Happy Thanksgiving everybody!!

Is your giving a sweet smelling sacrifice?

Posted in Learnings on November 23, 2010 by mikekeaton

I have received full payment and even more; I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. NIV – Phil 4:18

I saw something this morning in my quiet time I don’t think I realized before.  I was reading in Philippians and in chapter four I came to 2 fairly well known verses that get quoted A LOT and sometimes (probably most of the time) out of context.  Here are the 2 verses…

Phil 4:13 – I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength-NIV

Phil 4:19 – And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. -NIV

The learning to share is that I never saw before that these 2 verses are in the context of money, finances, and giving!!!!

Paul’s reference to “doing everything in Christ who gives me strength” is directly related to contenment!  Basically, he is saying “I can do everything, be content, through Christ who gives me the strength to be content“, with financial/material abundance or financial/material hardship.

Also, he has learned that his needs will be met through the sweet smelling God pleasing sacrifices (giving) of others.  Apparently, the Philippian Christians were generous in their supply to meet Paul’s needs.  By my count in just a couple of verses Paul references at least 4x they gave him money to help his needs!!  Their giving was a sweet smelling sacrifice that was acceptable and pleasing to God (Romans 12:1) which allowed Paul to realize that God will meet his needs according to the riches of Christ and help him to continue in being content with abundance or lack!!

What a powerful truth!!  Our giving is powerful!!  Our giving can be a sweet-smelling-God-pleasing sacrifice!!  Is mine?  Is yours? – hmmm!

God’s economy is not experiencing recession, and other learnings…

Posted in Leadership on November 10, 2010 by mikekeaton

I was blessed yesterday to attend the Take Out Conference at Northstar Church.  It was a great day!  We had the privilege to learn from some really sharp leaders, like Mike Lynch, Pastor of Northstar, Jeff Henderson, pastor of Buckhead Church, Joe Sangle, financial guru from Newspring church, and many others.  And one of the coolest parts was they did the conference for free!!  Awesome!!  Some of our volunteer leaders were planning to attend and I went along with them, it was great to learn alongside them, be encouraged, develop our relationships more, and gain knowledge and wisdom for the road ahead for leading our church to take the Gospel out to the community through community ministry.

There we several things that I learned and I wanted to post them today for other’s learning pleasure:

Vision

is more of a team sport than a person sport!  when vision is 1 persons job then you put a lid on the movement

“vision casters are vision carriers and vision carriers are vision casters”

ask this question everyday, “what did I do today  to cast vision for our church”

“start where you are, do what you can, use what you have”

“dont inform me, inspire me”

Outreach

“do not assume people will show up, you “go” to them, a religious system says, “ya’ll come to us”, a Jesus system says, “we’ll go to you”

“under promise, over deliver”

“serve to be heard”

“what would it be like if our church wasn’t there in our community?”  “saddens my heart to even think such a thing” (quoted by a principal of an elementary school)

“be inspiring, encouraging, giving, and provide opportunities”

Leadership

an uncommon ministry has:  uncommon leadership, vision, God dependence, heart, & committment

an uncommon resolve comes from confidence in God’s reality, God’s reliability, God’s resources, & God’s representatives

uncommon commitment asks, “what will it take” instead of “what do I have left”

Leading a church to be generous requires being defiant with vision, leadership and confidence, it also requires a laser focus, a call to action and clear instructions

Funding

“I want to see the book of Acts come to life in my lifetime”

-our church “will” fund our vision

-God’s economy is not experiencing recession

-we must provide relevant ways to give!

-we must teach giving in some way, every week, month, and year!!

Well, I hope you got something from those, i encourage you to check out the conference page and get the mp3’s.

Frustrated!! C’mon Man!!

Posted in Leadership on November 1, 2010 by mikekeaton

I went to a Pastor’s Conference years ago and heard the presenter say we could use any of the material he was giving us in any way we liked and then followed that with this statement, “b/c there are no copyrights in heaven”!

I thought that was great and went back home to process my learnings from the conference.   I soon found myself with an opportunity to share some of those learnings and began organizing my thoughts on paper from my notes from the conference.  During that process I was compelled to call the speaker at the church he served and speak with him about the notes and my opportunity.  Needless to say I was excited!!  However, in a few short moments my excitement was squelched.  I quickly learned that he was backing up on his comment that “there are no copyrights in heaven” b/c of a pending book deal on the material.

Now, I understand businesses have to protect their proprietary’s and a publisher especially.  But, in the spirit of ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown, C’MON MAN!

Now let me bring this present tense!  As a pastor/church planter, and a young one at that (not that I am young but our church plant is), I am always reading other pastor’s blogs, listening to podcasts of other sermons and leadership stuff, reading articles and going to conferences if I can when dollars are available, and several other ways to “get” info by which to grow in my own leadership and pastoring.  One of the things I have started to like is “free” webinars and teleconferences b/c I can stay at home or my office and gain insights from other journeymen.

But sometimes, even with all that intake there is still a need for one on one Q & A, feedback and exchange through coaching.  But there is one problem – IT’S NOT FREE!!  I have heard and even agree with the statement, “everyone needs a coach”, but too many other pastors, especially those who the “church world” would deem as successful and could offer much to help younger church planters like myself and many others, want to charge for their coaching, sharing of ideas and learnings.  I think it is like they must think, “hey God helped me learn how to be effective and successful, so, I think I will charge others for what heaven gave me for free”!!  C’MON MAN!!

Honestly, idk what they think and I really don’t want to judge their heart…but I get frustrated!!  There are so many other pastors that could help so many other pastors but for whatever reason they want to charge for their knowledge.  whatever happened to the older teaching the younger Paul taught in the pastoral epistles?  Whatever happened to Solomon’s wisdom that there are no new learning’s under the sun?  if that’s the case why do we charge for ideas that are as old as time?

I would love to sit at the feet of some of these “successful and effective” Gamaliel’s and learn from them and apply those learnings to see God’s Kingdom ADVANCE.  I am willing to even pay but the economy has hit our church hard and spending is not happening now or anytime in the near seeable future.  Maybe I am just whining and just need to man up, but why do we charge for God’s eternally free truth?  why?

my resolve is to offer whatever learnings I have to anyone who cares to listen (or read) for free!!  It’s a Kingdom Thing!!  All for the kingdom, say aye!!  c’mon man.

Invest & Invite, and Invite, and Invite!!!

Posted in Evangelism on October 6, 2010 by mikekeaton

I like to read other pastors blogs from time to time not b/c I need to go to sleep ( I know some people would be like what the ?, another pastor’s blog…c’mon man!! ).  well, mostly b/c I am always desiring to learn from others and even more mostly b/c most others are a lot smarter than me – ha!

I recently read one that I thought was great, so here is some practical advice from him (michael lukaszewski) on ideas (no copyrights in heaven on ideas) for inviting people to worship with you…check it out and pick a few to try….remember the harvest is ready, we just need workers…

“… one of the primary reasons were here is to share and live the Gospel and invite people to join His kingdom.  Since the church is the display of God’s glory on earth, and since Jesus said HE would build His church, we believe the church should be central to our lives and faith.  So inviting people to our church is part of our core mission.  Here’s forty great ways you can invite people to our church.

  • Grill out for the employees of a company or business.
  • Dress up like a Star Wars character wherever there are people and take pictures with kids and families.  Give them a special invite card with the location they can download the picture.  You will have a blast and invite a bunch of people to church. (let me know if you do this, i would like to take a picture w you)
  • Tailgate at high school football games.  Give away hot dogs and invite people.
  • Set up a moonwalk at a local park while events are happening.
  • Volunteer at community runs and bike races
  • Hand out coffee or hot chocolate at local events.
  • Give out hand warmers at winter events like the Christmas parade
  • Do a free oil change.
  • Host a UFC fight party.
  • Host a block party for your neighborhood.
  • Provide “full service” at a local gas station – wash windows and leave a car freshener
  • Show free family movies in your yard and invite your neighbors
  • Help local schools with their fall festivals.  Instead of re-creating the wheel, just help a school make their event better.
  • Take professional pictures at local school talent shows
  • Visit a nursing home
  • Take a couple of hours and put out door hangers in your neighborhood.
  • Go put invite cards on car windshields.  Try not to get arrested…that keeps it fun.
  • Be intentional about coaching a kids sports team.
  • You and your kids set up a lemonade stand.
  • Have a free garage sale…give away things and invite people to church
  • Do a free car wash
  • Walk around a neighborhood and collect canned food.  Invite people to church while asking for food.
  • Hand out helium balloons at special events
  • Get a truck, ladder and a bunch of light bulbs and walk around and ask people if they need light bulbs changed.
  • Set up a bounce house at the movie theater when a big kids movie premiers.  Or in front of another store.  Managers are often open to anything that draws attention to their store.
  • Put out road signs on the weekend (did you know about 15% of people who attend our church for the first time do so because they saw a road sign?)
  • Put a giant sign in the back of your truck.  Politicians do it – our cause is way more important!
  • Give away silly bandz anywhere there are kids.
  • Enter a float in one of the parades.  Walk along side it and give away candy and invites.
  • Take breakfast to school teachers.  Simply email the principal and ask if you can do it, set a day, and make it happen.
  • Salt driveways when it ices during the winter.
  • Help with field days at a local elementary school.  What school wouldn’t appreciate volunteers?
  • Take food to fire stations.  Let them know you appreciate them and that they are always welcome at your church.
  • Valet cars when a school has an open house.
  • Provide childcare for high school graduations.
  • Cook team meals before home games at local sporting events
  • Pass out candy and invites at your own house on Halloween.

Better yet…come up with your own idea, get your friends or group involved, and make it happen.  Let us know how we can help and how it goes!!”

What is plan B?

Posted in Uncategorized on October 4, 2010 by mikekeaton

i am posting my notes from a message i shared with our church back in 2007.  seems like old news i know but really it’s not.  this message has been used by God to launch a focus and passion at our church ever since it was given.  many  people are no longer living for themselves and are giving their lives away for God’s Kingdom to love on the “least of these”.  i thought to share it again here for various reasons, but mostly b/c i think the Lord wanted me to b/c of the way He led and dealt with me and our staff and elders at a working retreat this past weekend.  i hope you enjoy it…if you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to leave them…blessings…

What is Plan B!

1 John 2:6 – Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. NIV

-I have been asked in recent months what is plan b if the old winn Dixie bldg. that we have been talking about leasing as a new worship space doesn’t work out.  What is plan b?

-this question has launched an avalanche of questions in my heart about the future of Crossroads.  Many of which I to this day still don’t have answers to.  There is a constant tension within me that never goes away.

-walking as Jesus walked has wide applications for us:  our strategy, our style of leadership and ministry= servant leadership, servant ministry…Jesus’ ministry was crowned with characteristics like compassion, mercy, forgiveness, love, grace, meeting needs, practical help and teaching.

-the plan b question has launched other questions, like where is Crossroads going to land as some sort of permanent home.

A week ago, pastor in our community told me to enjoy the temporary meeting location (school) as long as we could, he said, “once you get into a building, people have a tenancy to get settled in and to put their stakes into the ground”.

-as I drove back to work from that meeting I just cried.  B/c I in no way ever want to be settled.  I in no way ever want to feel like we have arrived or that we don’t ever have to work anymore  -now I just want you to know I am in no way interested in us ever getting a bldg. if we think for one minute that we have finally made it and we don’t need to work anymore.  -I am not interested in us having a bldg. that is just open one day a week for us to gather and worship.  How self serving is that?  It cannot ever be about us!!  This is why we are changing the name of the no more set up fund-no more set up is about us, so we don’t have to set up, but Reaching Walton, is all about reaching our community and we must start here, right here.

-as I said a few weeks ago we will never be rewarded with much if are not faithful with little.  We will never be rewarded with reaching unreached people groups on the other side of our globe, if we don’t reach those right here in front of us.  We must start here!!

Acts 1:8- But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” NIV

-we must have a strategy to reach our city, our county, our state, our world

-the plan b question also led me to ask, what is Crossroads Church going to be known for???  Are we going to be just another casual, contemporary church that has slick graphics and cool music, or are we going to be known as a church that is changing lives and destiny’s forever?

-what is our attitude toward reaching people?  We should want to help people realize God’s love and to see their lives genuinely changed forever!!  -we are a disciple-making church, which means we meet people where they are and help them take their next step toward God.  Everyone has to have this as their own personal mission– to be and build disciples.  -But!!!!  There are too many church people who are here for themselves.  Do you actually realize that there are people who think they were saved for themselves?!  They think the church is here strictly for them.  Such pride!!!???

-we have it all backwards, so many church people look for a church that is what they want b/c its all about them and when the pastor doesn’t preach a certain way or the church is going a certain direction they either threaten to leave or go ahead and leave.  “growing churches don’t try to keep people they reach people” Who were any of us saved for??  Were not saved for ourselves, Not for our glory but for Gods’  -so my logical question then is how do I glorify God– by giving my life as a living sacrifice to him, through a life of worshipful service– Jesus said:

John 17:4 – I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. -NIV

-we too will bring God glory on earth by completing the work he gave us to do.

-we must live with the attitude that if no one else will, who will?  we will!!!  We cannot depend on the church down the street to fulfill our mission, it is our mission, we must work at it, all the time, and unlike a mission trip mission, this one does not have an end date in this life.  It never ends.  We are always on mission!! -People matter to God, and we must pursue them b/c they need to know of His love.

-to do this we are going to have to get down and get dirty.  We are going to have to get close to people, and they are gonna smell, they are gonna be dirty, b/c their lives are gonna be all screwed up with immoral living, addictions, selfish marriages, messed up parenting skills, irresponsible with their finances, worldly values, bad habits, and foul language, and the list goes on and on…..

-if we are going to “walk as Jesus walked” we are going to have to have a ministry mindset like Jesus, one of compassion, care, and help for those who have no one pleading their case,  the ones that are close to the heart of God, b/c he mentions them over and over in the bible.  -if we are going to “walk as Jesus walked” we must minister to the ones that are close to the heart of God, the poor, the widows, and the orphans.

Deut 10:18 – He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing.-NIV

Ps 68:5 – A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows , is God in his holy dwelling. -NIV

Deut 16:11 – And rejoice before the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name — you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and maidservants, the Levites in your towns, and the aliens, the fatherless and the widows living among you.-NIV

Isa 10:1-2 -Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees,  to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people, making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless. -NIV

James 1:27 – Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. -NIV

Lev 25:35 – “‘If one of your countrymen becomes poor and is unable to support himself among you, help him as you would an alien or a temporary resident, so he can continue to live among you. -NIV

Deut 15:11 – There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.-NIV

Prov 21:13- If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor , he too will cry out and not be answered. NIV

Isa 1:17 – learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed.  Defend the cause of the fatherless , plead the case of the widow. NIV

-I read this quote recently:

Dino Rizzo, Lead Pastor of the Healing Place Church, Baton Rouge, LA:

“if we are going to be like Jesus we… we have to really care for people, we have to be committed to helping the people who can’t help us, we have to be the real deal”

-he went on to say, and I love this:

“we believed early on that if we would take care of the ones nobody wanted, God would give us the ones everybody wants to have”

-to reach the ones that are close to the heart of God, we are gonna have to be ok with being up close and personal, we are gonna have to be like Jesus, we are gonna have to be willing to spit in the mud and pick it up with our hands and rub in someones eyes.  -in other words we are gonna have to be willing to get our hands dirty– you cannot make a disciple from a distance, its up close and personal it’s involvement in someone’s life, you got to get emotionally involved.

-the alternative is to sit back and be critical of others, judgemental, prideful, self-serving, all the things Jesus yelled at the Pharisees about!!!!

Realize you are the method! -there is no plan b, b/c you are it!!

Matt 28:19-20 – Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” -NIV

Be the method -if we don’t, who will???  Who??  —you, me, us, we

-what I am talking about is going to take more, more from everyone.  More sacrifice.  More money, more time, more people, more commitment, more energy, more focus, more everything.  -making a disciple is not easy.  It is hard work, but nothing is more rewarding than to see a person that you are investing in cross the line of faith and then begin to grow.  -who is in your life that you are intentionally making a disciple of????  Face and a name???—are you authentic????

-we are at a turning point.  We must make a decision.  Who is Crossroads? What are you gonna be known for?  Not what is mike gonna do, the office or the staff, but you.  I want to make a difference in heaven.  I want to take as many people there with me as possible.  You need to make a commitment today!  Become a disciple maker of all people groups and more specifically the poor, widows, and orphans!!

Next steps:

1 – become a follower of Jesus, a disciple, today

2 – commit to prayer and fasting for the future of Crossroads

3 – give more of my time, treasure, temple and talents for the mission and vision

4 – start seeking to be discipled or disciple another person

5 – commit to helping crossroads figure out how to reach the poor, widows, and orphans

dealing with discouragement

Posted in Learnings on September 23, 2010 by mikekeaton

And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”  -niv-1 Kings 19:9

the other morning i woke up really tired.  i must not have slept good but it seemed like that was the 4th day in a row that i woke up tired and not refreshed from sleep.  so you know, when i get really tired, i get really irritable.  So, i knew right from the start that i would most likely struggle that day.  Needless to say, my perspective was not the best.  Everything seemed bad and negative, you know, the glass half empty!  unfortunately, i had been feeling that way a lot as of late.

so, there i was feeling discouraged and easily finding myself and my thinking “off in the weeds”, and with that setting, sat down to have my ‘quiet time'(…what a way to start right?!)  so, i read the proverb for the day and then went over to Psalm 11 and read this… “In the Lord I take refuge…When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?”  The Lord is in his holy temple...”niv.   If i was really spiritual that would have been enough.  i mean when things are as bad as the foundations falling apart, God is still in control and sitting on the throne…so, no need to fret, worry or be down or discouraged.  But because i am not spiritual, it wasn’t enough.  i then went over to 1 Kings and read there in the reading i was to read that day and guess what it was about?  the time Elijah got discouraged in 1 Kings 18-19.  do you ever wonder if God has a sense of humor or if He wants to speak to you??

honestly, i almost just closed the book and went to another passage, but i didnt and continued to read and as a result, God spoke…Elijah was really tired to start off with b/c he ran faster than a chariot (special spiritual ability according to ch. 18).  in the midst of fatigue and coming off an incredible spiritual high (prophets of baal), he heard Jezebel was going to kill him and then, the text says, he became afraid.  at that moment, Holy Spirit reminded me of the proverb that says, the “fear of man will lead to a snare”.  in elijah’s case his snare was discouragement.  i am not sure if all discouragement begins with fear but i think mine was to some degree-fear of failure, fear of others opinions and acceptance and more.

Well, Elijah basically said “that’s it”,  “i’m done”, “i’m out” and then fell asleep.  An angel came to him and ministered to him with food and more sleep.  in fact he woke up and the angel told him to eat again and then go back to sleep, which he did.  Refreshment is so needed in life and especially in ministry. i go, i go, and i go, i give, and i give, and i give, and get little rest.  its not right i know, but its the truth, and as a result i get tempted to fear man, and see everything as bad and negative.

God came to elijah and said, “what are you doing here, Elijah”?  so i asked myself, “what are you doing here, Mike”?  why are you at this place of discouragement?  idk, just tired i guess.

you know what i noticed next?  God never helps Elijah out of his discouragement.  after Elijah, whines and complains 2 times, God just gives him some new directions and instructions.  in other words, just more to do.  one of those things was to annoint an apprentice, which would help him and eventually replace him, maybe that can be encouraging, but i just noticed that God listens to him and then basically, in a nutshell, says, “get busy about my work”

interesting how Scripture flows together…a few days prior, i read in proverbs, “in all work there is profit”.  i dont know if i got over my discouragement, but i know i feel better today.  i did rest better last night.  my conclusion is, get rest, plenty of rest, b/c it is so needed for longevity in ministry, dont fear man, and stay focused on the work that God has given me.  God will help me through it, and you too.  so, next time you are down or tempted to see everything as bad and negative…look around, find some work to do, and get busy!!

Pray for our Country!!

If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand” -NIV; -Mark 3:24

I was watching the news this morning and listened to the spin doctors express their views on the economy, President Obama’s popularity, and the fight for the Senate and Congress between Democrats and Republicans that will all climax this November.

I will admit, I was troubled.  Not so much by the “news” related to all those issues but by the division of our country and they way elected officials are fighting for power.  I do not presume to be smart when it comes to politics, so there is a lot I don’t know, but, our country is in trouble.

We do have a need for politicians and the goals they have for the people of our cities, counties, states, and country.  But there is a greater problem here that goes way beyond a quest for power of control of “seats” that I don’t hear anyone addressing.  I am not surprised by that though, because the issue is primarily a spiritual one and since our country has separated politics from religious beliefs, then one can understand why this issue is not being addressed.

The issue is unity!  In the above passage, Jesus clearly states that we are in a bigger trouble than we are admitting.  we will not be able to stand over the long haul…not because we are broke, even though that will have an effect, but mostly because we are a “kingdom” divided and such kingdoms fail.  what a sad reality.

in a lot of ways we are hoping for the republicans or President Obama, or even Democrats, or some other entity (stock market, etc.), to make the difference for the long haul for our country.  Not going to happen!  since America has divorced itself from God, we have made money our God and no man can serve both.  “

“God and money are total adversaries.  It is totally impossible for anyone to be totally committed to financial matters and have a hope of any serious commitment to God”-Gordon MacDonald

When ever we have a surplus of money we:

1- are always on the cusp of drifting away from God.

2-we have less to pray for and less of a dependence on Him.

3-are tempted toward the “myth” of self-sufficiency.

4-are forever fighting pride and losing humility.

These thoughts from a book I am reading right now resonate with me and with what I listen and watch on the news as it relates to where we are in our country.  It’s disheartening!

We must pray and pray hard for our country, our leaders, and ourselves, to return to God so that times of refreshing might come – Acts 3:19
